How important is an organization like Safe Space NOVA to the LGBT+ youth community?

Space Safe NOVA is an organization that I wish I would have had in my coming out process. I was someone who always struggled with acceptance because of my family background and political views. Safe Space NOVA can give that extra set of welcome arms for those who may need a voice of comfort and compassion.

How important do you think it is to target the 14-18-year-old range?

It is essential to create confidence and a positive outlook on sexuality at a young age because it will significantly impact the choices and decisions made for those who may not know where to turn to right away.

What are some of the challenges and roadblocks that you have personally faced within the LGBT+ community, and how do you think Safe Space NOVA can help break down any barriers?

Being an athlete, both in high school and college, had its own set of challenges, and finding supportive teammates is not always easy. It can be hard to discuss your sexuality with an open mind and confidently say the words “I’m Gay.” Safe Space NOVA gives that help needed and a safeguard to those who may not feel comfortable coming out to coaches, teammates, friends, and family. One of the largest roadblocks I faced when coming out was being asked to step down from my church’s youth leadership position.

Have you personally dealt with or witnessed someone firsthand deal with the issues in then LGBT+ community that Safe Space NOVA is aiming to prevent (depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, drug abuse, etc.)?

I had people I know and myself struggle with coming out as gayI am very open to talking about my struggles with depression and suicide because my choices significantly impacted my life. When I look at my past, I realized how small it was and now looking forward, I see how big my future is. We sometimes get so caught up in our personal lives and living for a specific moment or goal that we tend to forget the bigger picture. I look back on that moment now and realize how short my life would have been. Now, I am using my story to pursue mental health and obtain a master’s degree in psychology specializing in LGBTQ+ issues in kids. I didn’t have to change myself because I was gay; I had to be truthful to who I was to become the best version of myself for my family, friends, and now husband. I am so thankful for the work that Safe Space NOVA has accomplished for youth in the DC area and beyond. Their work will keep inspiring youth in the LGBTQ+ community to keep thriving, pushing boundaries, find the courage, and change future generations’ views on what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
